The Environmental Product Declaration is in accordance with ISO 14025 and describes the enviromental features of the construction of ceramic tiles used by Ceramic Solutions.  This declaration is based on the "Ceramic Tiles" PCR document, version 08-2011.

Ceramic Solutions suppliers are in accordance to this declaration, which promotes the manufacture of products that are environmentally safe.  German manufacturers have long shared a passion for preserving the environment.  By setting domestic standards, investing in environmental technologies and setting up partnerships to promote their green products. 


Environmental protection during manufacturing stages:

No contamination of water or ground is made during the manufacture of Ceramic Solutions tiles.  The process is entirely free of waste water, with mixing water released in the form of steam during the drying process or redirected into the internal water circuit where it is reused.  A brief description of the environmental protection measures are listed below, and are aligned towards low energy consumption, low-emission waste air and recycling of materials.

1. Broken ceramic material or other clay refuse are recycled.

2. Glaze and other waste water are being collected in a special water treatment facility. Solid matters are separated from water and then dried, recycled and put back to the baking process as a stabilizing ground offset.

3. Up to 75 % of the operational water demand is generated from in-house.

4. Filter waste from the flue gas treatment is brought to recycling and then reused 100 % in the production of concrete or gypsum raw material.

5. Products are packed on eco-friendly standardized pool pallets and wrapped up by recycled or recyclable plastic packaging film.

6. Packaging material consists at least of 80% eco-friendly recycled paper.

7. Thermal Recycling: Process related waste kiln heat is recycled and economical used for drying.



Life Cycle:

Ceramic Solutions German tiles have a life expectancy of 50+ years.  With an end-user focus, ceramic tiles are expected to have a lifespan the same as that of the service of the building in which they are used.  No expensive or environmentally damaging maintenance or remedial work is required for correctly specified ceramic tiles. 

In comparison, commercial facilities using vinyl flooring only has a life expectancy of 10-15 years.  In areas of high foot and wheel traffic, it is expected that maintenance will need to occur within the first 3 years.  Consequently the issue of disposing PVC flooring becomes a huge environmental burden.  Whilst many vinyl manufacturers promote the recyclability of vinyl, this only refers to unused off-cuts.  Vinyl containing adhesives end-up in landfill.  As mentioned by Inhabitat's Green Building guide, PVC has been repeadedly linked to many health concerns and has been listed as one of the worst materials for cancer related impacts.  So, you may ask yourself, what is the environmental and human harm when considering the end-of-life disposal for your flooring.  It should be noted that the Australia's Green Building Council offers a credit for PVC minimization.

Ceramic tiles are inert and do not present any hazards if they are landfilled.  Ceramic tiles can be recycled after they are removed e.g. crushed for use as inert fillers.

Environmental Benefits using HT Ceramic Tiles

Buildings are constantly exposed to many contaminants.  From bird residue to exhaust fumes, making architectural building panels appear dirty.  Yet there's another kind of external material constantly bombarding buildings that is harder to see: NOx (nitrogen oxide).  As the primary component of smog, NOx not only makes buildings dirty, it also threatens the quality of air we breathe.  But when NOx molecules float near the surface of Ceramic Solutions HT facing bricks and facades, they are attacked and transformed into clean oxygen.

Scientific analyses prove that a HT facade surface of 1000m² cleans the air as effectively as 70 medium sized deciduous trees.  The antibacterial surface also helps decompose algae, fungi and moss.  Rainwater flushes dirt and residue down the surface thereby creating low maintenance, self washing cladding, reducing the need for detergents.  HT coated products ensure an ageless appearance and long term minimum maintenance.
